Academic Assessment
The Metropolitan School District of Steuben County monitors student
progress in the academic standards as part of the daily instructional
process. Locally developed standards-based assessments as well
as unit and course assessments monitor student mastery.
Indiana Assessment
System
In addition to district assessments students in grades three through
ten participate in the Indiana
Statewide Testing for Academic Progress (ISTEP+) to monitor
mastery of the Indiana Academic Content Standards in English/language
arts and mathematics. The
assessment
system is changing from a fall assessment to a spring assessment
during the 2008-09 school year. The schedule is as follows:

Students in kindergarten, first, and second grades participate
in the Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments that are administered the second,
third, and fourth quarter of the school year. More information about the assessments can be found at:

Students in the CORE 40 high school courses participate in the
end of course exams as required by the state.

Beginning with
fall 2008 ninth grade students are required to pass the Algebra 1
and English 10 end of course assessments as a graduation
requirement. The fall 2008 tenth grade class will be the last
group of students required to pass the “Graduation Qualifying
Exam” (GQE).

All schools in the MSD of Steuben County are accredited by the
Indiana Department of Accreditation and the
AdvanceEd/ North
Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement
(NCA/Casi).
The Annual Performance Report required by IC 20-20-8 must be published by the govening body of each school corporation between January 15 and January 31 of each year. The law states that no later than 60 days after publication of the report, the governing body may conduct a public hearing to present and discuss the report.
